Candidates endorsed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani scored major victories Tuesday in Democrat primaries, with two of his endorsed candidates ousting incumbent U.S. House members.

A third candidate backed by the mayor won the primary for a seat being vacated by retiring Rep. Nydia Velázquez.

In probably the biggest upset, Darializa Chevalier defeated incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat in New York's 13th Congressional District. Espaillat is chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. He is also considered close to House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y.

Newsmax and Decision Desk HQ called the race for Chevalier about an hour after the polls closed. With about 92% of the vote counted, Chevalier had 49.5% to Espaillat's 46.2%. There were two other candidates in the race.

Chevalier, like Mamdani, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, received a boost from the mayor's appearances at her campaign rallies in the district, which includes parts of Harlem, Washington Heights and the Bronx.

In New York's 10th Congressional District, former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander trounced incumbent Rep. Dan Goldman, who was lead majority counsel in the first impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump before he entered Congress.

Newsmax and Decision Desk HQ called the race for Lander about 30 minutes after polls closed. With 88% of the vote counted, Lander was at 66.5% to Goldman's 33.5%.

Goldman, in his second term, won the 2024 Democrat primary by almost 43 percentage points. He was backed by Gov. Kathy Hochul and House leadership.

State Assemblywoman Claire Valdez, like Mamdani and Chevalier, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, won the primary for New York's 7th Congressional District, a seat being vacated by retiring Rep. Nydia Velázquez.

Decision Desk HQ had Valdez with 58.3% of the vote, followed by Antonio Reynoso at 33.1% and two other candidates.

The 7th District, which covers parts of Brooklyn and Queens, has been dubbed the “Commie Corridor,” a nod to the Democratic Socialists of America's electoral power there. The group's influence was evident in last year's June mayoral primary, when Mamdani gained some of his strongest results in that district.
