President Donald Trump on Monday praised retired Army Lt. Col. James Carafano who said the United States' position in the Middle East is the strongest it has been since the end of World War II.
"Great words of wisdom from Highly Respected James Carafano. Thank you James!" Trump wrote on Truth Social, referring to an interview Carafano gave on Fox News earlier Monday.
Trump's post came as the conflict between the U.S. and Iran intensified over the past week. The U.S. military has targeted Iranian military infrastructure for nine consecutive days. Iran, meanwhile, has launched missiles and drones at U.S. assets across the Middle East.
Two American soldiers were killed during an Iranian missile and drone strike Saturday at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan.
U.S. Central Command said a soldier's remains have been found after a service member was declared missing following the attack, but they have yet to be identified.
In his post, Trump highlighted a quote from Carafano, a senior counselor at The Heritage Foundation:
"Our position in the Region is the strongest that it's been since the end of World War II. We have been dealing with this from [former President] Jimmy Carter. Since the days of Jimmy Carter, we have never had a position in the Region this strong to create a better future for the Region and then, that means a safer America, and I think that this is the price we are paying — Trust me, it's going to pay off for decades!"
