Electricity demand in Texas grew 9% in the six months ended March 2026, nearly five times the U.S. average, driven by the rapid expansion of data centers and cryptocurrency mining operations in the state, according to data released by Hitachi Energy on Thursday.

The Hitachi Energy Grid Pulse report found that Texas recorded the largest increase in both power demand and new power supply additions among U.S. power grids during the period. "Load growth over the last six months has been aggressive," said Debashis Bose, an advisor at Hitachi Energy.

Nationwide, around 28 gigawatts of new power-generating capacity, primarily from solar and battery storage projects, were added between October 2025 and March 2026. Texas' ERCOT grid and the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) grid in the Midwest accounted for roughly half of all new generation additions.
