Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., took to the Senate floor Friday to lay out Democrats’ price for ending the shutdown: a one-year extension of Obamacare subsidies.

“Democrats are ready to clear the way to quickly pass a government funding bill that includes health care, affordability. Leader [John] Thune just needs to add a clean, one year extension of the ACA tax credits to the CR. So that we can immediately address rising healthcare costs,” Schumer said in his speech.  

He added, “That's not a negotiation. It's an extension of current law, something we do all the time around here.”

Thune, the Senate Majority Leader, said he’s not likely to bring Schumer’s proposal for a vote on Friday.

Further, Schumer is calling for a bipartisan committee to “continue negotiations after the government reopens on reforms” before next year’s Obamacare enrollment window.

Notably, both House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., oppose a one-year extension. Jeffries famously turned down a one-year extension in a Capitol confrontation with Rep. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y.
