Ashley Reagan Dunster, granddaughter of President Ronald Reagan, said Saturday that one of her grandfather's greatest strengths was his ability to inspire hope by speaking directly to everyday Americans during an appearance on Newsmax's "America Right Now."
"My grandpa had an excellent way of being able to bring people together," Dunster said.
"He spoke to the people that were raising their families, buying groceries, putting gas in their cars, working every day.
"He had a way of speaking to those people and making them feel hopeful," she added.
Speaking ahead of Independence Day, Dunster said Reagan's optimistic leadership style was rooted in the values he practiced throughout his life.
"I was at his ranch speaking to some high school kids," she said.
"Being up at his ranch just kind of reaffirmed everything he believed in."
"He believed in hard work," Dunster said.
"He believed in humbleness. You're not above doing anything for somebody else."
She said Reagan's California ranch, known as the "Western White House," reflected the personal relationships that defined his presidency.
"Up at the ranch is where he built so many relationships with people," she said.
"Just kind of what grounded him is what allowed him to build these really incredible relationships, which allowed him to do so much when he was in office."
Dunster also credited Reagan's willingness to work across party lines for his broad electoral success.
"He had a way of reaching across the aisle, working with the other side, figuring out ways to come together in order to make it successful," she said.
"So young families, our youth could really grow up and feel like America was a beacon of light, a beacon of hope for them."
Christopher Nixon Cox, grandson of President Richard Nixon, also discussed his grandfather's legacy, calling Nixon's rise from humble beginnings "a story of resilience" that demonstrated "the promise of America that anyone in America can succeed."
Cox said Nixon connected with working Americans through his appeal to the "silent majority," explaining that he "spoke directly to the people about why American values were important" and built "a connection that was really unbreakable" with everyday Americans.
