Seventy-two percent of Americans oppose punishing professional athletes who refuse to participate in LGBTQ Pride Month celebrations, according to a Rasmussen Reports survey.

The national survey follows Major League Baseball's warning to three San Francisco Giants pitchers who wore Bible verses on their caps during the club's June 12 Pride Night, reigniting debate over religious expression and participation in league-sponsored Pride events.

Just 13% of U.S. adults said athletes should be required to participate in their teams' Pride Month celebrations, while 72% said they oppose punishing players who decline to take part. Sixteen percent said they are unsure, Rasmussen Reports found.

The survey found broad bipartisan agreement on the issue, with 79% of Republicans, 67% of Democrats and 70% of independent voters saying athletes should not be compelled to participate in Pride Month events.

The poll follows controversy surrounding Giants pitchers Landen Roupp, JT Brubaker and Ryan Walker, who displayed Bible verses on their Pride Night caps.

MLB issued what it described as a routine warning, saying writing of any kind on uniforms violates league rules regardless of the message.

"To be clear, this routine verbal warning not to wear the hat in future games is not disciplinary and had absolutely nothing to do with the content of the message," MLB said in a statement, The Athletic reported.

"We respect players' right to free expression. However, writing of any kind, with any message, is prohibited" under the league's uniform policy.

Roupp said his reference to Genesis 9:12-16 reflected his Christian faith.

"That's just kind of something I believe in, and I stand firm in that," Roupp said. "I'm thankful we live in a country where we have the freedom to believe what we want ... and express what we want."

Beyond athletics, Rasmussen found many Americans remain skeptical of corporate Pride Month campaigns.

Thirty-six percent said businesses do too much to celebrate Pride Month, compared with 22% who said companies do not do enough and 26% who said the current level is about right.

The survey also found that 29% of Americans said they are less likely to purchase products from businesses that celebrate Pride Month, while 21% said they are more likely to do so. Forty-one percent said such promotions have little or no effect on their buying decisions.

Among Republicans, 56% said businesses do too much to celebrate Pride Month, compared with 20% of Democrats.

Nearly half (47%) of Republicans said corporate Pride campaigns make them less likely to buy from those businesses, while 34% of Democrats said such campaigns make them more likely to buy from them.

The Rasmussen Reports survey of 1,315 U.S. adults was conducted June 21-23 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
