Former President Barack Obama will headline a fundraising event in Martha's Vineyard on Aug. 31 to bolster Democrat efforts ahead of what party leaders expect will be a costly and politically significant redistricting battle ahead of the 2028 elections, Punchbowl News reported on Monday.

The fundraiser, hosted by former Attorney General Eric Holder, chair of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, will feature "dinner and a discussion," according to an invitation obtained by reporters.

Proceeds will benefit the NDRC and affiliated organizations as Democrats prepare to invest heavily in reshaping congressional maps in Democrat-controlled states.

The event comes as Democrats lay the groundwork for an aggressive push to redraw legislative and congressional districts after the next census-driven redistricting cycle.

Party strategists are expected to target blue states such as Maryland and New York, where changes to existing maps could strengthen Democrat representation, Punchbowl News reported.

The effort is expected to carry a hefty price tag. In several states, Democrats would first need to mount statewide referendum campaigns to amend constitutional or legal restrictions governing the redistricting process before new maps can be adopted.

Virginia is among the states viewed as a potential battleground. Democrats failed in a 2026 effort to redraw congressional maps there and are expected to spend millions of dollars if they pursue another attempt before the next redistricting cycle.

Obama has remained a prominent supporter of Democrat redistricting efforts since leaving the White House. He has frequently appeared at fundraisers and events for the NDRC, making the issue one of his signature post-presidential political priorities.

Holder, who served as attorney general during the Obama administration, has led the NDRC since its creation in 2017. The organization was established to help Democrats compete in state legislative races, gubernatorial contests, and legal battles that shape congressional and state legislative district maps.
