Americans celebrating the Fourth of July should remain vigilant and report suspicious activity, John Chell, a former chief of department for the New York City Police Department, told Newsmax Friday.
The nation's Independence Day celebrations are a reminder of the country's freedoms while also requiring heightened security measures, Chell told "American Agenda," adding that law enforcement agencies are fully mobilized for the holiday weekend.
"What a great feeling about freedom and the power of our country," Chell said. "It's a great feeling today and tomorrow."
Chell said the NYPD has implemented an "all hands on deck" approach for the holiday, with officers deployed throughout the city as millions of residents and visitors gather for fireworks displays, parades, and other celebrations.
"For the security of the NYPD, they're all hands on deck today and tomorrow to make sure everyone has a wonderful, safe Fourth of July," he said.
Law enforcement agencies typically bolster security for Independence Day celebrations nationwide. Large crowds are expected to gather in New York City for the annual Macy's Fourth of July fireworks show, one of the nation's largest Independence Day celebrations.
Chell also encouraged the public to remain alert and report anything that appears suspicious to law enforcement.
"If you see something, go with your first thought — because your first thought is usually the right thought — and let us handle it," he said.
"We're here to make sure everyone has a wonderful, safe Fourth of July."
