Fmr FBI, Kirk Detail to Newsmax: 'Full-Court Press' in Manhunt

Investigators are mounting a "full-court press" to identify the gunman who fatally shot conservative activist Charlie Kirk at a college campus event, as authorities continue combing through video and forensic evidence, former FBI officials tell Newsmax.

"There are things that the FBI is doing, you know, behind the curtains, so to speak, that they're not letting us know right now – how far along the investigation they are – but it's a full-court press by the FBI, Homeland Security and local police, state police to identify who the shooter is," Greg Shaffer, a former member of the FBI Hostage Rescue Team and CEO of Schaffer Security Group, told Thursday's "Wake Up America."

Campus security cameras have reportedly shown the shooter and is one of the many ways the manhunt can zero in on a target after two early suspects had been detained, interrogated, and released, according to FBI Director Kash Patel.

"They're at the location, the exact location of where the shot was fired, and they're trying to collect evidence at that scene," Shaffer told co-hosts Marc Lotter and Sharla McBride. "They're collecting the cell phone videos and photographs from everybody that was there on site.

"And they're scouring through those videos to see if they can identify a vehicle or the shooter as he left the scene.

"You know, again, the rooftop may have the weapon, the weapon may have been left there – may have been left behind. We don't know that. The FBI is keeping that information very close to the chest.

"There may be DNA residue up there on the rooftop, or fingerprints or shell casing with a fingerprint."

Shaffer, whose security group was the head of security and did all events for Kirk and Turning Point USA from 2015 to 2022, noted the security detail for Kirk was to protect the asset and not in charge of rooftop surveillance and campus event security like the U.S. Secret Service would be for an asset.

"You have got to remember that the personal security for Charlie Kirk – their mission, the reason for them being there – is to protect Charlie Kirk; full stop," Shaffer said. "They do not do anything in regards to securing the site itself.

"That being said, securing a threat from 200 yards away or more – we're not sure exactly how far that distance is yet – it's very difficult, if not impossible.

"The manpower is intense if you have manpower issues, all obviously if you have money issues.

"So to have a counter sniper team or have the capabilities to identify and designate a threat that's 200 yards away is extremely difficult.

Former FBI agent John Iannarelli joined the program to urge attendees to share footage for the investigation.

"People who were there who took video want to solve this case," he said. "The FBI has made available a contact number.

"They can upload video that they have to assist in this investigation," he noted, warning "right now there's a political assassin roaming free out there."
