A watch party for Knicks fans outside Madison Square Garden for Game 3 of the NBA Finals Monday has been canceled.
The game, Madison Square Garden's first NBA Finals game since 1999, is expected to be attended by President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, prompting heightened security.
The New York City Police Department said the city's permitting office rejected the watch party request in coordination with the Secret Service, The New York Times reported. The watch parties are expected to resume for Game 4.
Matt McCool, special agent in charge of the Secret Service field office in New York, said in a statement to The Times that the two agencies made the decision because of "the security requirements associated with an event of this scale and the need to maintain a secure environment for protective operations."
The Knicks lead the San Antonio Spurs 2-0 after winning the first two games on the road and are halfway to their first NBA championship since 1973.
A watch party outside Madison Square Garden during Game 2 on Friday resulted in 17 arrests, and nine people were issued summonses for disorderly conduct, according to The New York Times.
New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch has warned that the watch parties, along with the upcoming World Cup, have placed unprecedented demands on the Police Department.
One person punched a 23-year-old female police officer and bit a second officer, the Police Benevolent Association said.
More than 1,000 officers were deployed on Friday in and around Madison Square Garden.
Knicks fans have been warned to arrive two hours early for Monday's game and not bring bags because of heightened security.
While the Madison Square Garden watch party is canceled, fans can still attend watch parties at Wollman Rink and Brooklyn Bowl.
