A majority of Americans say the cost of living is the worst they can remember, and rising gas prices continue to weigh heavily on voters' views of the economy, according to a new national Politico poll.

The survey of 2,061 registered voters found that 57% said the cost of living is the worst they have ever experienced, while 26% said it is bad, but that they can remember worse times. Just 8% described the cost of living as "not bad."

The poll also found that higher gas prices are influencing voters politically.

Among those who said gas prices have affected how they plan to vote in November, 46% said they are doubling down on supporting the party they already planned to back, while 31% said they are more likely to vote for the opposing party. About 15% were undecided.

Respondents were divided over who bears responsibility for the state of the U.S. economy, although President Donald Trump received the largest share of blame.

Nearly 32% said Trump holds full responsibility, while 17% said former President Joe Biden bears full responsibility.

Another 14% said responsibility is shared equally between the two presidents.

About 11% said responsibility rests mainly with Trump but also with Biden, while 10% said Biden is mainly responsible, with some responsibility falling on Trump.

Asked what they believe is driving higher gas prices since Trump returned to office, respondents most frequently cited the war in Iran, with 63% selecting the conflict as a cause.

Other commonly cited explanations included Trump's tariffs on imported goods, selected by 40%, and Trump's handling of the economy, cited by 38%.

About 23% blamed supply chain disruptions, while 21% pointed to insufficient domestic oil production.

Nineteen percent cited sanctions on Russia or other oil-producing nations, and 15% blamed production cuts by OPEC and other oil-producing countries.

The findings also revealed sharp partisan differences.

Voters who backed Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election were substantially more likely than Trump voters to attribute higher gas prices to tariffs and the president's economic policies.

Trump voters, meanwhile, were more likely to blame international events, including the conflict in Iran.

The poll was conducted July 12-15 among 2,061 registered voters and had an overall margin of error of ±2.16 percentage points.
