Most Canadian citizens consider the United States the "greatest threat" to their country, according to a survey published Tuesday by the Pew Research Center.

Among Canadians, 59% said that the U.S. was the nation's greatest threat, as President Donald Trump continues to suggest that Canada should become the 51st American state.

Ironically, a majority of Canadians (55%) also consider the U.S. their most important ally.

Other of from the wide-ranging study include:

• Canada was the only country in the world where the majority of citizens consider the U.S. both its greatest threat and most important ally.

• In Mexico, 68% of its citizens who were surveyed consider the U.S. the nation's greatest threat. Among Mexicans, the U.S. was also considered its most important ally, but by only a plurality, not a majority (37%).

• Israelis are especially likely to name the U.S. as their country's most important ally, with 95% saying so in the survey and only 1% calling it the country's greatest threat.

• South Korea is second on the list where its citizens consider the U.S. its most important ally at 89%, with 13% saying that the U.S. is its greatest threat.

• Russia is the most commonly named threat in eight of the 10 European countries surveyed.

For this analysis, Pew surveyed 31,938 adults in 25 countries, including the U.S., from Jan. 8 to April 26. The study was carried out before the Israel-Iran war started in June, and before the U.S. attack on Iran's nuclear sites.
