In less than a decade, Canada turned a narrow exception for the terminally ill into the world's most permissive euthanasia regime, with assisted deaths and incidents of death-by-doctor surging past 16,000 in 2024 and estimates exceeding 100,000 total since legalization.

The societal cost, say detractors, is that vulnerable patients face questionable assessments, family exclusion, and a system that markets death as a solution to poverty, disability, and mental distress.
