Small fires briefly erupted on platforms attached to the Brooklyn Bridge during Macy's annual Fourth of July fireworks display Saturday night, prompting a response from firefighters but causing no damage to the historic structure, officials said, according to the New York Post.
Video from the celebration showed flames and black smoke rising from multiple locations on the bridge as fireworks launched from temporary pyrotechnic platforms and exploded overhead.
Witnesses reported seeing several small blazes ignite during the display before quickly burning themselves out.
Nearing Khoula, a 24-year-old visitor from France watching from the Brooklyn waterfront, said she initially believed the flames were part of the show before realizing they were not.
"At first I thought it was supposed to happen, but then I was scared it would explode," Khoula said. "There were four at the same time. Some extra fireworks exploded due to the fire."
Mohamed Shaban, 31, of Egypt, said the flames appeared to grow before being extinguished.
"It started as a small fire and got bigger. There was too much black smoke," he said.
The fires burned for about a minute before being extinguished, according to witnesses.
A source familiar with the response said the blazes were confined to temporary platforms installed to launch fireworks and did not involve the bridge's structure. The source added that the 143-year-old Brooklyn Bridge remains safe and structurally sound.
The New York City Fire Department said two fire engines responded and extinguished the fires. No injuries were reported.
The incident occurred during Macy's annual Independence Day fireworks spectacular over the East River, one of the nation's largest Fourth of July celebrations that drew thousands of spectators to viewing areas along the Manhattan and Brooklyn waterfronts.
