Trump Calls Tillis 'a Loser' Over Blanche Opposition

President Donald Trump ripped Sen. Thom Tillis on Friday after the North Carolina Republican said he would not support Todd Blanche's nomination for attorney general unless Blanche condemns the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, reports The Hill.

Asked by a reporter about Tillis' opposition to Blanche's confirmation, Trump responded with a series of personal attacks against the senator, arguing that Tillis had lost support within the Republican Party and would not have been able to win reelection.

"Senator Tillis is a loser, stone cold," Trump said. "He's an angry man because I basically — he said he was forced to leave the Senate because I wouldn't support him, and he quit.

"So now he's trying to make trouble by opposing anybody."

Trump continued his criticism, saying Tillis was "not respected in the Senate" and had clashed with fellow Republicans.

He specifically referenced Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, whom Tillis previously scrutinized during the confirmation process.

"He fought Pete Hegseth," Trump said. "Pete Hegseth turned out to be a gem."

Tillis announced earlier this year that he would not seek reelection in 2026, setting up an open-seat race in North Carolina.

Trump has often slammed the senator over policy disagreements and his handling of key legislative issues.

The dispute now centers on Blanche, whom Trump nominated for attorney general.

Tillis has said he wants Blanche to publicly condemn the Jan. 6 attack before he would consider supporting the nomination.

Trump, however, strongly defended Blanche and dismissed concerns about his confirmation prospects.

"Todd Blanche is a brilliant guy who everybody likes and everybody respects," Trump said.

"And Tillis is always like, 'I'm gonna do this, I'm gonna do that.' He should have done it before when he was a senator," the president said.

Trump argued that Tillis would have struggled in a reelection campaign and claimed the senator depended on his endorsement.

"He needed my support," Trump said.

"And I said, I can't give you my support.

"He's not qualified, he's not. He's not good for the position of senator."

Trump concluded his remarks by again praising his nominee, saying, "Todd Blanche is fantastic."
