Despite President Donald Trump's endorsement Sunday of Rep. Mike Collins in the Republican runoff for U.S. Senate in Georgia, the congressman narrowly leads opponent Derek Dooley as voting continues Tuesday.
According to an Insider Advantage poll completed Monday night, Collins leads Dooley, a political newcomer and son of former University of Georgia football coach Vince Dooley, by a slim 50%-48% margin among likely voters.
The contest to determine who opposes Democrat Sen. Jon Ossoff this fall is widely seen as a "proxy war" between Trump and GOP Gov. Brian Kemp.
Trump has endorsed Collins, while Kemp, who is term-limited, has supported and campaigned with longtime family friend Dooley.
Surprisingly, Trump and Kemp — who have clashed since the governor supported certifying Georgia's electoral votes for Joe Biden in the 2020 election — agree that Lt. Gov. Burt Jones should be the next governor.
Jones led a crowded field in the Republican primary but has trailed billionaire healthcare executive Rick Jackson in runoff polls.
Insider Advantage's final poll showed Jackson holding a narrow 48%-47% edge over Jones.
Although he has likened himself to Trump as a businessman candidate, Jackson, 70, is a former business partner of Trump enemy and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and a past contributor toformer South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who opposed Trump for the Republican nomination in 2024, and the political action committee of Never Trumper and former Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo.
Noting their past animosity, veteran conservative activist and Augusta publisher Phil Kent told Newsmax: "Kemp and Trump believe it is very important to be united In order to defeat, [Democrat nominee and former Atlanta Mayor] Keisha Lance Bottoms."
