President Donald Trump on Sunday praised grocery chain Giant Eagle for slashing prices on more than 300 products through Labor Day, and he called on other supermarkets to follow suit as his administration pushes to lower costs for American families.

In a Truth Social post, Trump said Giant Eagle, "like Walmart, is stepping up in a big and bold way" by answering his call to reduce prices.

He pointed to what he said were declining prices for oil, gasoline, eggs, and prescription drugs, while blaming inflation on the Biden administration.

"Other Grocery Chains must immediately follow the lead of these absolute Patriots at Giant Eagle and Walmart," Trump wrote. "Together, we will make America stronger and more affordable than ever before."

Trump was responding to Giant Eagle's recently announced "On Sale This Season" initiative, which took effect July 9 and runs through Labor Day.

The regional supermarket chain said it is cutting and holding prices on more than 300 of its most frequently purchased items, including meat, produce, dairy, pantry staples, snacks, and beverages.

"We know our customers are seeking value in the face of elevated expenses," Justin Weinstein, Giant Eagle's executive vice president and chief merchandising and marketing officer, said in announcing the program.

He said the company expanded the seasonal pricing effort after a similar promotion last fall.
