British political strategist Thomas Corbett-Dillon told Newsmax on Sunday that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer appears determined to remain in office despite mounting political pressure and speculation fueled by a Truth Social post from President Donald Trump suggesting Starmer is set to resign.
Corbett-Dillon said on "Sunday Report" that he was surprised by Trump's post Sunday indicating Starmer would be stepping down, but questioned whether the embattled Labour leader is prepared to leave office.
"Whether the prime minister will step down … I was surprised to see the president's tweet," Corbett-Dillon said. "We'll see. I think he might be trying to give him a little nudge in the right direction, but I don't know if he's going anywhere."
He added, "He's holding on for dear life. So, we'll see if he goes."
Starmer has faced growing criticism in recent months amid declining approval ratings and renewed scrutiny of Britain's handling of scandals in which gangs of Pakistanis and other South Asians allegedly sexually exploited underage girls.
Pressure intensified this week following the publication of a national inquiry report containing extensive testimony from victims who described years of the sexual abuse in multiple U.K. communities.
Corbett-Dillon accused Starmer of focusing more on criticism surrounding the issue than on the crimes themselves.
Starmer, of the Labour Party, previously served as director of public prosecutions before entering politics.
"At every stage he's more upset that the information is out there than he is about the crimes that took place," Corbett-Dillon said.
Calling the abuses "horrible," he said the report documented repeated failures by authorities to protect vulnerable girls.
"The fact that the authorities were never there to defend them is, I think, the worst thing," Corbett-Dillon said. "I see in the report so many cases of girls going to the police and the police handing them back to the abusers.
"I mean, it truly was a horrific situation for the U.K., and it's truly an embarrassing situation."
The report has intensified debate over how police, prosecutors, and local officials responded to allegations of abuse over several decades, and has added to the political challenges confronting Starmer's government.
