Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton on Wednesday cast Democrat rival Xavier Becerra as a continuation of California's Democrat establishment, arguing voters face a choice between "more of the same" and change in the state's governor's race.

Speaking on Newsmax's "Rob Schmitt Tonight," Hilton criticized Becerra's record and linked him to what he described as the failures of Democrat governance in California.

The two advanced to the general election after finishing among the top two vote-getters in the state's jungle primary.

"It's going to be a very clear choice," he said.

"If you want more of the same, if you're happy with the chaos and the cost and the incompetence and the corruption of 16 years of Democrat one-party rule, if you want your taxes to go up even more — more regulations on your business, sure — vote for Xavier Becerra, because that's what he's promising."

Hilton said Becerra, who served as Health and Human Services secretary under former President Joe Biden, could not think of anything he would change over the past 16 years.

"He had a moment like Kamala Harris on 'The View,' where she was asked about Biden. Even the Biden people think that he's useless and incompetent," Hilton said.

"How bad do you have to be for the Biden team to dismiss you as a joke? This is what happens when you have a corrupt regime, where you get these career politicians who have no accomplishments," he continued.

"They don't achieve anything, but they're good at pandering to the various groups."

Hilton noted Becerra has been a career politician for 36 years.

"He's going to be a very clear choice," Hilton said. "Do you want more of that, or do you want change?

"Do you want lower taxes, lower costs?"

Hilton said California needs to do a much better job of counting votes.

"One of the ways that we can do that is to have voter ID, because then you wouldn't have this ridiculous signature verification. We've got people peering at signatures at these vote centers trying to match them," he said.

"We can vote for voter ID here in California in November. It's on the ballot."
