Rep. Sheri Biggs to Newsmax: FISA Reform Key to Security

Rep. Sheri Biggs, R-S.C., said Saturday on Newsmax's "America Right Now" that reforms to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) are necessary to protect Americans' civil liberties while ensuring the nation remains secure against growing threats.

Biggs, a member of the House Homeland Security Committee and the House Freedom Caucus, said she initially opposed FISA reauthorization because she believed stronger safeguards were needed to prevent abuses of the surveillance program.

"I voted against it initially because I believe that there were reforms that needed to take place," Biggs said.

The South Carolina congresswoman pointed to concerns over past misuse of FISA authorities and said lawmakers successfully pushed for changes before approving a temporary extension.

"We were able to push that a little further, and we were able to get some of the reforms," she said. "So I did vote for the temporary bill to get that across."

Still, Biggs argued that additional work remains to strengthen the law while preserving critical national security tools.

"We have a long way to go, and we need to make sure that our homeland is secure," she said. "I will continue to work on that and place that as a priority."

Biggs emphasized that homeland security should remain at the forefront of congressional efforts, citing recent security threats and the need to protect the nation, its leadership, and American citizens.

"To me, the homeland is a priority, the security of our nation, to make sure that our president is safe and secure, that his family is safe," she said.

The congresswoman also voiced support for the SAVE Act, calling it "a no-brainer for America" and arguing that election integrity and national security go hand in hand.

On broader security issues, Biggs criticized the Biden administration's border policies, saying, "The open borders were a complete failure from the previous administration."

She added that Republicans have united behind President Donald Trump's security agenda and pledged to continue pursuing stronger border protections and homeland security measures.

"I would like to see us continue to make strides in pushing for stronger border security and make sure that our nation is safe," Biggs said.
