RNC's Joe Gruters to Newsmax: Iran Won't Hurt GOP

President Donald Trump's decisions regarding Iran will not hurt Republicans in the midterms because the president is doing "what's right, to protect our country," Republican National Committee Chair Joe Gruters told Newsmax on Friday.

Appearing in-studio on Newsmax's "Wake Up America," the Florida state senator dismissed reports suggesting the president's renewed military action against Iran could create political problems for the GOP in 2026.

"Absolutely not," Gruters said when asked about concerns raised in recent media reports. "I have full faith and confidence that the president of the United States [is going] to do what's right, to protect our country, to put us in the best possible position."

Gruters said Trump has remained consistent in his pledge to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, arguing the administration's approach strengthens both national security and America's diplomatic standing.

"He said there's not going to be any nuclear ... weapons," Gruters said. "We're going to make sure [Iran doesn't] do that.

"Don't screw around with the president of the United States. If you say you're going to do something, do it. If you're not, be prepared to face those consequences."

The comments come as some media outlets have reported divisions among Republicans over Trump's handling of Iran following renewed U.S. military action and heightened tensions in the Middle East.

Gruters, however, said he was "so thankful" Trump is leading the country and insisted Republicans remain well positioned heading into next year's midterm elections.

Turning to the broader political landscape, Gruters argued Democrats are facing growing internal turmoil, pointing to reports of multiple incumbent House Democrats facing serious primary challenges from the party's left wing.

"This is what happens when AOC [New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez] and [Vermont Sen.] Bernie Sanders take control of your party," he said. "They've inspired all these left-wing wackadoo, radical leftists to run, and they're winning these races, which creates a favorable matchup for us."

Gruters said Democrats have failed to offer voters a positive agenda beyond opposing Trump.

"They offered nothing to the American people other than the fact that they don't like the president," he said. "We have a message that if you believe in the American Dream, you believe in affordability. This president is the one to do it for you."

Looking ahead to 2028, Gruters brushed aside speculation about a potential Republican primary featuring Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, saying Trump will remain the dominant force within the GOP.

"Whoever he picks is going to be the nominee," Gruters said after recounting a recent Oval Office conversation with the president. "He is the leader of the party."

Gruters also predicted Republicans will retain control of Congress in 2026, saying the GOP will rely on Trump to highlight policy differences with Democrats and "go all the way to victory in November."
