Sen. Rick Scott to Newsmax: Revive SAVE America Act

Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., told Newsmax on Tuesday that Senate Republicans should sit down with holdouts and address their concerns one by one to revive the stalled SAVE America Act, casting the negotiation in the mold of his old corporate playbook.

On "Ed Henry: The Big Take," Scott pointed to public polling showing broad support for tighter election rules and argued the path is straightforward.

"I think we just need to, you know, come to talk about it, find out where people have concerns, and then do everything we can to solve their concerns," he said.

The senator framed the task as a familiar one.

"You know, I'm a business guy," he said. "That's what I did in business. So I built the largest hospital company in the world."

"I did it by sitting down with people, saying, what are your needs? If I can meet your needs, I'm going to do it," Scott said.

Scott co-founded Columbia Hospital Corp. in 1987, which merged with Hospital Corporation of America in 1994 to form what became the nation's largest for-profit hospital chain.

"And so we all want the president to be successful. We all want to get, you know, secure elections," Scott added.

The bill, which would require proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections, passed the House 218-213 in February but has repeatedly stalled in the Senate.

On June 4, the Senate voted 50-48 to reject an amendment offered by Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., that would have attached the measure to an immigration funding package.

GOP Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, and Thom Tillis of North Carolina joined Democrats in opposing the package.

Scott's polling reference reflects a split public record.

National surveys have shown roughly 80% support for requiring photo identification and similar majorities for requiring proof of citizenship to register, including a Pew Research Center survey at 83% and a Gallup Poll at 84%.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., has said repeatedly that the numbers are not there to overcome the 60-vote filibuster threshold, and the latest tally showed Republicans short of even a simple majority for the amendment.
