Sen. Rick Scott to Newsmax: Must Investigate Jack Smith Perjury Claims

Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., told Newsmax on Tuesday that Congress must conduct a full investigation into former special counsel Jack Smith after newly released records raised questions about whether Smith misled lawmakers under oath about the scope of his investigation into their communications.

Appearing on Newsmax's "Ed Henry The Big Take," Scott said Smith should be held accountable if he falsely testified before Congress that his team did not review lawmakers' text messages.

"We have to hold him accountable. We have to do a real investigation," Scott said.

"If he didn't do anything wrong, that's fine. But it sure appears he lied to Congress."

Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, released documents Tuesday that he said show Smith's investigative team obtained and reviewed the text messages of more than 40 members of Congress and other individuals during its Jan. 6 investigation.

The records appear to conflict with Smith's sworn testimony before the House Judiciary Committee in December, when he said investigators reviewed phone logs but did not examine the substance of lawmakers' text messages.

Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., responded to Grassley's disclosure by suggesting on X that Smith may have committed perjury.

Scott said the allegations are another example of what he believes is the federal government abusing its investigative powers against political opponents.

"By the way, I'm fed up with this," he told Newsmax.

The Florida Republican pointed to several past instances in which he said he was improperly targeted, including investigations involving his former company, the disclosure of his tax returns, and the seizure of records connected to the House Jan. 6 investigation.

"Under [former President Bill] Clinton, they didn't like the fact that I went against Hillarycare, so the Clinton administration targeted my company," Scott said.

"Under [former President Joe] Biden, they stole my tax returns. Booz Allen [Hamilton] has never been held accountable for that. Then Jan. 6, they stole my records, and now this."

He warned that if federal investigators can obtain lawmakers' private communications without consequences, ordinary Americans could face similar government intrusion.

"So when does this end? If they can do it to me when I ran a big company, if they can do it to me as a U.S. senator, nobody's safe," Scott said.

"Any American, they're not safe. They want to come after you, they're going to come after you."

Scott said Congress should overhaul federal surveillance practices and require investigators to obtain warrants before accessing Americans' private communications.

"We have got to change the way we surveil Americans," he said.

"We shouldn't be surveilling any Americans. You should ... have to get a warrant for it."
