A new CBS News poll found that most Americans want the war between the United States and Iran to end.

The poll found that 78% of Americans want the war ended now, compared to 22% who want the conflict to continue.

Despite the Trump administration's stated goals in launching the war, only 31% believe the U.S. has permanently halted Iran’s nuclear program.

The poll found that only 32% believe the war prevented Iran from invading other countries, 26% believe it made the Iranian people safer and freer, and 21% believe it made Iran’s leadership more pro-U.S.

Although a majority want the war between the United States and Iran to end, only 22% believe the agreement favors the U.S., while 41% say it benefits both sides equally.

The poll also found that 69% of respondents do not believe the war was worth the costs to the U.S., including higher gas prices, while many said it was unsuccessful in advancing U.S. strategic or economic interests.

Respondents were divided along party lines. About 44% of MAGA Republicans said they believe the conflict should continue, compared with 56% who want the war to end now.

Republicans are also divided over whether the U.S. has permanently halted Iran's nuclear program or prevented Iran from threatening the region, and over whether the agreement represents a draw or a U.S. victory, the CBS News poll found.

Overall, 64% of respondents said they believe the war had a greater impact on the global economy than President Donald Trump expected, while 66% believe an agreement was reached primarily because the administration wanted the war to end.

Forty-two percent of respondents said they expect gas prices to decline, compared with 35% who believe prices will remain the same and 23% who believe they will rise further.

Thirty-eight percent of respondents said Iran is unchanged by the war, compared with 37% who believe it is weaker and 25% who say it is stronger.

Trump received low marks for his handling of the war, with 36% approving and 64% disapproving. Meanwhile, 57% of respondents said the war created more problems than it solved, compared with 21% who said it solved more problems than it created and 21% who said neither.

The CBS News/YouGov survey was conducted among a nationally representative sample of 2,519 U.S. adults interviewed June 17-19, 2026. The margin of error was plus or minus 2.4 percentage points.
