Former Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., told Newsmax on Sunday that Ukraine is winning its war against Russia and urged the United States to deepen its support by providing Kyiv with the weapons it needs and making clear that Russian aggression will not be tolerated.
Appearing on "Wake Up America Weekend," King pushed back on suggestions that Ukraine should be forced to surrender territory to bring the conflict to an end.
"I don't think there's any obligation at all, or any reason why Ukraine should be giving up territory," King said. "Perhaps maybe something small and marginal. But no, right now I think Russia is losing the war."
King's comments came as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy highlighted damage from recent Russian attacks, including strikes on residential areas and what he described as an attack on a critical facility near the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
While acknowledging the heavy toll the war has taken on Ukraine, King argued that Russian forces have suffered significant setbacks and that Kyiv has proven more resilient than many expected when Moscow launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.
"I know it's a war of attrition. Ultimately, Russia would win, but right now the most severe damage has been caused by Ukraine," King said. "They've not been defeated. They seem to have perfected drone defenses."
King said Ukraine continues to inflict substantial losses on Russian forces despite enduring devastating casualties of its own.
"Listen, it's terrible casualties being sustained by Ukraine but they're also inflicting severe damage on Russia," he said.
The former congressman said continued U.S. backing will be crucial if Ukraine is to maintain its position against Russia.
"What is important is the United States ... to strengthen its commitment to Ukraine, giving them the weapons both offensive and defensive that they need, and making it clear that Russian aggression is not going to stand," King said.
The United States has provided tens of billions of dollars in military assistance to Ukraine since the war began, including air-defense systems, armored vehicles, artillery, and other weapons. Debate has continued in Washington over the scope and duration of U.S. support as the conflict enters its fifth year.
King argued that now is not the time for the United States to ease its commitment, saying stronger military support would reinforce Ukraine's battlefield gains and send a clear message to Moscow.
