Rep. Sessions to Newsmax: Wait for Vance Briefing on Iran Deal

Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas, told Newsmax on Sunday that lawmakers and the public should refrain from deciding whether they support the Trump administration's memorandum of understanding with Iran until negotiators, including Vice President JD Vance, provide a detailed explanation of the agreement.

Sessions said on "Wake Up America Weekend" that members of Congress need an opportunity to question administration officials directly about the negotiations and the expectations behind the framework agreement signed Wednesday.

"For me to simply take the MOU and say, 'Well, I'm for it or against it,' I think misses the point," Sessions said. "The negotiation is the key to this."

Sessions said he expects Vance, who has led negotiations for the administration, to meet with House and Senate Republicans and answer questions about the talks.

"Vice President JD Vance will come to our conference. He will go on the Senate side. He will be in closed doors. He will be asked direct questions, and it's important that he answer these questions," Sessions said.

Although public debate over the memorandum has intensified, Sessions argued that lawmakers should wait until negotiators explain not only what Iranian officials sought during the talks but also what the United States expects to achieve.

"When the negotiators come and actually sit down and walk through these things, not just the thinking of what the Iranians said, but what our expectations are, it will become clearer," he said.

Sessions said Vance, more than anyone else in the administration, will face scrutiny from lawmakers seeking details about the agreement.

"That is where the president, but really, JD Vance, is going to come up on the Hill, going to have to meet with people who will ask these tough questions," Sessions said.

The Texas Republican recently released a statement saying his review of the memorandum raised "serious questions" that should be answered before any final agreement is completed.

"The administration's own negotiators owe the American people visibility," Sessions said in the statement.

According to the administration, the memorandum establishes a framework for broader negotiations between Washington and Tehran.

Vance has led U.S. discussions in Switzerland aimed at addressing Iran's nuclear program, sanctions, regional security concerns, and other issues that would be addressed in a final agreement.

"But before we decide whether we're for it or against it, there needs to be a little bit more homework done," Sessions said.
