Rep. Malliotakis to Newsmax: NYC Dems Signal Socialist Shift

Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, R-N.Y., warned Saturday on Newsmax that three Democratic socialists are now all but certain to enter Congress next year after sweeping New York City's Democrat primaries with backing from Mayor Zohran Mamdani, telling Newsmax the only check on what she called a hard-left lurch is a Republican-held House.

Malliotakis spoke on Newsmax's Wake Up America Weekend days after Mamdani-endorsed candidates Darializa Avila Chevalier, Claire Valdez, and former city Comptroller Brad Lander won Democrat House primaries in heavily blue districts covering Upper Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens.

Avila Chevalier unseated five-term Rep. Adriano Espaillat in the 13th District; Lander defeated two-term Rep. Dan Goldman in the 10th; Valdez won the open 7th District seat being vacated by retiring Rep. Nydia Velazquez.

The New York Republican said voters who tolerate that drift have only themselves to answer to, quoting Plato's warning that "the price you pay for apathy toward public affairs is to be ruled by evil men."

She said the New York City Democrat turnout was "only 7 or 8%" and called the result "insanity."

"This is certainly not the party of your grandfather or your father.

It's not the party of JFK or Bill Clinton anymore," Malliotakis said.

"This is a group of people who want no jails, they want no borders, they want no cops.

"Some even think they should defund the military altogether."

She tied the platform to what she called a "real socialist communist ideology that the winners want to implement here," one she argued "would make us look more like Venezuela or communist Cuba."

Pressed on a 2019 social media post by Avila Chevalier that read, "I forgot to get napkins, so I just wiped my hand on the American flag behind me," Malliotakis called it "absolutely disgusting that somebody like that can be elected in the United States House of Representatives to represent our country, not just here, but, you know, abroad."

She drew a parallel to the February 2023 House vote that stripped Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., from the Foreign Affairs Committee, a removal Malliotakis had publicly pushed for since 2021.

She then turned to a fourth pending arrival.

"Look at the guy from New Jersey who was a defense witness for the blind sheik, who was then convicted of conspiracy in the World Trade Center bombing of 1993. He's also most likely going to become a member of Congress next year."

That refers to Adam Hamawy, a Princeton-area surgeon who won the June 2 Democratic primary in New Jersey's 12th District and testified at the 1995 seditious conspiracy trial of Omar Abdel-Rahman.

"These folks are going to have access to intelligence, to classified briefings. You know, everyone in America should be concerned about that," Malliotakis said.

Invoking Abraham Lincoln's warning that the country would be destroyed from within, she said only a continued Republican House majority can blunt the shift as the nation heads into its 250th anniversary year.
