Political strategist Dick Morris said Democrats appear poised to move further left ahead of the 2028 presidential election, arguing the party is following a historical pattern after losing the White House.
Speaking on Newsmax TV's "Saturday Report," Morris said Democratic presidential defeats have often been followed by the emergence of more liberal nominees.
"Whenever the Democrats lose the national election, they always move to the left," Morris said, citing George McGovern's nomination in 1972 after Vice President Hubert Humphrey lost to Richard Nixon in 1968 and the nominations of Walter Mondale and Michael Dukakis following Ronald Reagan's victories in the 1980s.
Morris said he believes Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., has built momentum that could position her as a leading contender for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028.
"I think that AOC has momentum. She has enthusiasm," Morris said. "I think she very well may be the Democratic candidate."
He also pointed to Michigan politics, where he said Abdul El-Sayed represents what he described as a new generation of Democratic candidates capable of energizing progressive voters.
"I think that you have a genuine change agent in Abdul El-Sayed," Morris said. "I think he'll get a lot of votes of people — not socialists, not Marxists."
Morris suggested El-Sayed's candidacy could benefit Republicans politically if it further highlights ideological differences between the parties.
"I hope he does because it'll be easier," Morris said. "It'll be common sense versus crazy."
Morris also argued Michigan has become increasingly competitive for Republicans, pointing to what he described as changing political trends among union households and auto workers.
"Let's remember that Donald Trump carried Michigan in '24 and in '16," Morris said. "Michigan is changing, and the auto workers are increasingly voting Republican."
He said those shifts could produce unexpected Republican victories in future statewide races.
"I think that you may see upsets going on in Michigan, possibly in the Senate," Morris said.
Michigan has emerged as one of the nation's key battleground states in recent election cycles, with both parties investing heavily in presidential and statewide contests.
The state's electorate has experienced shifts in voting patterns as Democrats and Republicans compete for support among suburban voters, union households, and working-class communities.
The 2028 Democratic presidential field has yet to take shape, though several prominent Democratic governors, members of Congress, and other national figures have been mentioned as potential contenders.
Candidates have not formally announced campaigns, and the party's nomination process remains more than two years away.
