The Supreme Court's latest ruling on mail-in ballots reinforces Iowa's approach to protecting elections, Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, R-Iowa, told Newsmax on Tuesday.
The high court on Monday ruled in favor of Mississippi over the Republican National Committee, delivering an immediate reprieve to the 14 states with grace periods for mail ballots.
"The Supreme Court ruling actually supports what Iowa law already does," Miller-Meeks said during an appearance on Newsmax's "Wake Up America Early."
Miller-Meeks said that Iowa has struck the right balance between ensuring every legal vote is counted while reducing opportunities for fraud.
Under Iowa law, she said, absentee ballots must be postmarked or barcoded by the day before the election and received within a limited time afterward because of potential mail delays.
Voters casting provisional ballots also have a week to correct, or "cure," issues such as identification or address discrepancies.
"We have found it's a way to help reduce fraud, but to make sure that every legal ballot is counted," Miller-Meeks said.
The congresswoman contrasted Iowa's election system with practices in some Democrat-led states, arguing that lengthy ballot-counting periods undermine public confidence.
"In California, they're still counting ballots way after the election," she said, adding that New York also experienced extended ballot disputes following closely contested races.
Miller-Meeks said requiring ballots to be postmarked by Election Day while establishing a firm deadline for receipt prevents ballots from continuing to arrive long after voting has ended.
"That is going to take care of some very egregious practices in some of the blue states," she said.
The Iowa Republican also discussed the GOP-backed SAVE America Act, calling it a top Republican priority despite the bill's lack of sufficient support to clear the Senate under current rules.
Miller-Meeks said House Republicans have approved the legislation three times and suggested its provisions could ultimately be included in a future budget reconciliation package, with some modifications.
She also voiced support for the bipartisan 21st Century Housing Act, saying it reflects more than a year of work by lawmakers from both parties and addresses housing affordability, one of President Donald Trump's signature campaign issues.
Miller-Meeks said that once Congress sends the bill to the president, it becomes law within 10 days unless it is vetoed.
"This is a very important bill," she said. "It's a great bill."
