Maine Democrats Set for Senate Debate

Maine voters will hear from Democrats seeking to replace former Senate nominee Graham Platner in a debate Thursday.

A debate featuring four candidates — Shenna Bellows, Troy Jackson, Nirav Shah, and Jordan Wood — will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday in Portland.

News Center Maine, which is hosting the debate, told Politico it invited candidates who received at least 20% of the vote in their respective primaries in June.

Platner dropped out of the race last week amid allegations of sexual assault. Republican Sen. Susan Collins is running for a fifth term and is considered the most vulnerable GOP incumbent in the 2026 midterm elections.

Collins is the only Republican senator running in a state that Democrats carried in the 2024 presidential election.

Maine Democrats will pick Platner's replacement at a nominating convention July 25 with more than 600 delegates voting.

Jackson, who previously endorsed Platner before scrubbing his social media of praise for him, called on News Center Maine to invite every candidate who has entered the race.

"This is an unprecedented process and every step should be as open, fair and transparent as possible," Jackson said. "Nobody should be shut out of a U.S. Senate debate because of an arbitrary threshold based on the results of an entirely different race."

The 90-minute debate will air on WCSH 6 and WLBZ 2.
