Outgoing Sen. Cornyn Says Trump Revels in Chaos

Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, is becoming more critical of President Donald Trump since his loss in the Senate Republican runoff to state Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Trump endorsed Paxton days before the runoff, leading to his overwhelming victory. Cornyn was running for a fifth term.

Cornyn told Semafor that he plans to hold a fundraiser for several Republicans up for election, including Sens. Jon Husted of Ohio, Susan Collins of Maine, and Dan Sullivan of Alaska, along with challengers John Sununu in New Hampshire and Mike Rogers in Michigan.

The senator said he is "very worried about the midterms," noting polls show the GOP struggling in "places where we should be kind of running away with it."

But he said he will not help Paxton.

"The president picked Paxton, and he's got $350 million. I think he can spend his money," Cornyn said. "I'm going to try to help in other places."

"I don't know how Paxton raises the money he's going to need to run against Talarico — who's got unlimited resources — in the next four and a half months," Cornyn added. "And while Talarico is definitely a weirdo, you know, take your pick."

Cornyn also dismissed Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who said his refusal to back Paxton makes him a "sore loser."

The Texas GOP is "continuing to alienate what I would call traditional conservative Republicans like me, and the people who voted for me. Makes no sense whatsoever," Cornyn said.

Cornyn said he never found conversations with Trump "particularly useful."

"Because he can and will change his mind depending on the next person he talks to on the phone," Cornyn said.

"The president seems to revel in chaos, which is so different from any other leader that I've ever seen. I don't know about you, but I like to minimize the chaos in my life," Cornyn added.

"He just seems to revel in it. We've seen even recent evidence of it on the DNI [director of national intelligence]," Cornyn said, adding that he hasn't spoken with Trump since his primary loss.

Cornyn said he still believes Trump is "due a little deference on his Cabinet" and told Semafor he is not out to hurt the president.

"I am free to disagree," Cornyn said.
