Republican National Committee Chair Joe Gruters told Newsmax that President Donald Trump should use Monday's campaign rally in Michigan to remind voters of his administration's economic accomplishments and its focus on working Americans as Republicans seek to flip the state's open U.S. Senate seat.
Gruters told Newsmax's "American Agenda" that Trump's message should emphasize policies he argued directly benefit workers, even as the administration faces criticism over the economic effects of tariffs.
"First and foremost, the fact that this president has gone to bat for the American worker every day since he's been reelected," Gruters said when asked what Trump should tell Michigan voters.
Gruters pointed to the Working Family Tax Cuts package, saying it includes provisions eliminating taxes on overtime pay, tips, and Social Security benefits.
"Twenty-five percent of Michiganders benefit from the no tax on overtime," he said. "This president has been laser-focused on the average working American because he wants everybody to have the chance of the American dream."
Gruters said that the administration needs to do a better job communicating those accomplishments.
"We just have to continue to push that message," he said. "Not enough people know about it. Not enough people know about all the great things this president has done."
He added that voters should expect Trump and senior administration officials to make more appearances around the country.
"That's why you're going to see the president and administration officials do more and more of these visits across the country," Gruters said.
Asked how Republicans should address concerns about tariffs, including a 50% tariff on certain Canadian imports that critics say has hurt some Michigan businesses, Gruters defended Trump's trade strategy.
"These things take time, but the D.C. elitists have sold the American worker out for five decades," Gruters said. "This president stands behind the average American. He's going to bat for him every single day."
Gruters also voiced confidence in Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers, a former House Intelligence Committee chair. He is running for Michigan's Senate seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Gary Peters. Michigan's primary is Aug. 4.
"I think Mike Rogers is a phenomenal candidate. I expect to win that race," Gruters said. "We're going to continue to fight every single day until November so we can return majorities for the president so we can continue to pass good legislation."
