Amazon and its Goodreads platform have restricted reviews of Vice President JD Vance's new book after it was hit with a wave of negative ratings and critical comments online.

"Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith," published June 16 by HarperCollins, details Vance's conversion to Catholicism and follows his bestselling memoir "Hillbilly Elegy."

Amazon reportedly now limits reviews of "Communion" to verified purchasers, while Goodreads currently shows no user reviews or ratings after previously disabling ratings for the book. The Goodreads page indicates that 645 users are currently reading the book, and another 911 want to read it.

The restrictions followed an apparent effort by online critics to flood the book with negative reviews.

On Thursday, the X account @HQNewsNow, affiliated with former Vice President Kamala Harris, posted what appeared to be a Goodreads screenshot and wrote, "Reviews have been turned off for JD Vance's book after it received numerous 1-star reviews."

The post included several reviews that appeared on the platform before ratings were disabled.

One reviewer wrote, "Why would anyone believe anything that comes from this man?

"He does not uphold Christian values, has lied to all Americans, does not respect his wife & his soul has been sold to the highest bidder."

Another review stated, "Save your time and money. Read anything else," while a third said, "Dude wouldn't know religion if it or the pope hit him in the face."

Goodreads' guidelines state that ratings may be restricted in certain situations, including when users rate books "based on factors irrelevant to the contents of the book" or when users "artificially inflate or deflate a book's average rating."

Several media reviews of the book have also been critical.

A Wall Street Journal review described "Communion" as "part religious memoir, part campaign book" that suffers from moments of "egregious sloppiness."

The Cut wrote, "Communion does [Vance] no favors, though, mostly in its sheer banality. It's not even incendiary … though he can't help but hide his contempt for liberals (one woman is smeared for the mortal sin of wearing a beret)."

Vance is currently conducting a national promotional tour for the book and recently appeared on ABC's "The View."

During the June 16 appearance, Vance said the memoir is "actually way less political than you might think."

The discussion nevertheless focused heavily on issues including convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, Iran, and immigration. At one point, Vance told the panel, "Let's talk about the book; I'm here to sell books."

Newsmax reached out to Amazon and Goodreads for comment but did not receive an immediate response.
