Rep. Smith to Newsmax: GOP United to Pass Reconciliation Without Single Dem Vote

Rep. Jason Smith, R-Mo., told Newsmax on Wednesday that Republicans overcame narrow House margins to pass a reconciliation package funding key border-security agencies without a single Democrat vote.

Appearing on "National Report," Smith, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, said getting the measure across the finish line was uncertain because of the GOP's slim majority in the chamber.

"With such narrow, thin margins in the House of Representatives and knowing that not one single Democrat actually cares about protecting our homeland and securing our border, it was scary," Smith said.

Despite those concerns, he said Republicans remained united and delivered a major victory on one of the party's top priorities.

"Every Republican stood together. We were able to get this through," Smith said. "We got it funded without one Democrat in the House or Senate actually fighting for the American people."

According to Smith, the legislation provides funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Customs and Border Protection, and other border-security agencies that Republicans view as essential to protecting the nation.

He stressed that the package goes beyond funding agencies for the current fiscal year and instead provides resources for the next several years of President Donald Trump's second administration.

"It not only funds it for this year, but the next couple years of the Trump administration, because we're not going to do this again," Smith said. "We're not going to go through this fight.

"We're not going to allow the Democrats to hold the American people's security and safety hostage."

Smith also blasted Democrats for what he described as a failure to support border enforcement and homeland security funding.

"These people are reckless and they'll do whatever they can to try to promote their political agenda," Smith said.

He cited recent funding lapses involving the Department of Homeland Security and accused Democrats of putting politics before public safety.

Looking ahead, Smith predicted future clashes over border security unless Democrats embrace stronger enforcement policies.

"Unfortunately, until the Democrats get a lick of common sense, we're going to be back at this again in a couple of years," he said.
