Grothman to Newsmax: Iran Deal Must Keep Funds From Military Use

Rep. Glenn Grothman, R-Wis., told Newsmax on Friday that key questions remain unresolved in the emerging agreement between the United States and Iran, particularly regarding the release of funds and verification of Tehran's nuclear commitments.

Grothman, appearing on "National Report," said the most significant aspects of the agreement are the issues that have not been settled and need to be addressed over the next two months.

"The big thing is what wasn't agreed on and the blanks that are going to have to be filled in sometime in the next 60 days," Grothman said.

Grothman said any funds released to Iran should be tightly controlled and limited to civilian purposes. He argued that the money should be held in escrow to prevent it from being used to strengthen Iran's military capabilities.

"We have to make sure that these funds do not go to rebuilding drone factories, rebuilding missile factories, that they're not going to immediately turn around and increase their war-making capabilities," Grothman said.

He pointed to Iran's longstanding hostility toward the U.S. and Israel, saying Tehran's rhetoric has not changed despite the agreement.

"Iran, which calls the U.S. 'the great satan,' hasn't changed their rhetoric at all," Grothman said, adding that the country's hostility toward Israel also remains a concern.

Grothman also cited past missile attacks involving Iran, saying the U.S. must ensure that released funds are not diverted to military projects.

"We remember these missiles were shot at Israel, not to mention UAE, Kuwait, that sort of thing," he said.

In addition to concerns about funding, Grothman said the U.S. should seek immediate proof that Iran is complying with commitments related to its nuclear program.

Under the agreement, Iran has pledged that it will not develop nuclear weapons, Grothman noted. He said Tehran should be willing to identify the location of its enriched uranium so it can be removed.

"Because there's a promise here, they're not going to have nuclear weapons," Grothman said. "They should have no problem in showing the United States right now where that uranium is so we can remove it."

Grothman said verification of Iran's uranium stockpiles and safeguards on the use of released funds should be among the top priorities as officials work through the remaining details of the agreement in the coming weeks.

"Those are the things we should be looking for in the next 60 days," he said.
