Rep. Comer to Newsmax: Praises 'Aggressive' DOJ in Govt Fraud Cases

Americans are finally seeing accountability for government fraud cases as the Trump administration's Justice Department pursues investigations and arrests tied to alleged abuses in federal programs, House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer told Newsmax on Tuesday.

The Kentucky Republican praised during an appearance on "Wake Up America" what he described as a more aggressive approach by federal law enforcement, pointing to recent arrests in Minnesota and actions targeting alleged healthcare fraud in California.

"We're finally seeing an aggressive Department of Justice," Comer said. "With the changes at the Department of Justice, with [acting U.S. Attorney General] Todd Blanche at the helm, now we're seeing a lot more activity out of the Department of Justice."

Comer's remarks came as his committee released a report accusing Minnesota officials of failing to act on warnings about what investigators described as widespread fraud involving state-administered programs.

According to Comer, federal authorities have already arrested more than three dozen people in Minnesota in connection with fraud investigations, adding, "I think that's the tip of the iceberg."

Comer also cited federal efforts in California, where authorities allegedly removed hundreds of hospice providers from government rolls after determining they were billing for services they were not providing.

"In California, with the hospice fraud, they've kicked over 500 people off who were registered as hospice providers that they identified weren't providing any service for hospice, but they were billing hospice," Comer said.

The lawmaker pointed out that "we can't arrest anyone in Congress. We do the investigations. The Department of Justice has to do the arresting."

Comer also highlighted a recent development involving Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, saying Vice President JD Vance had referred the House Oversight Committee's findings to the DOJ for further review.

The committee's report alleges Walz and Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison were warned for years about fraud within state programs but failed to take action. Walz's office has rejected the committee's findings and criticized the investigation.

Comer said the referral from Vance could increase pressure for further federal scrutiny.

"I sent the letter to Vice President Vance. We gave him the report. He read the report," Comer said. "And last night, I'm very happy to say he referred Gov. Walz to the Department of Justice."

Comer emphasized that holding elected officials accountable is just as important as prosecuting individuals accused of carrying out fraudulent schemes.

"If you don't hold the elected officials accountable, they're going to continue to do it," he said.
