Trump: 'No Idea' How McConnell Is Doing

President Donald Trump said Wednesday he has "no idea" how Sen. Mitch McConnell is doing.

He said he has not spoken with the Kentucky Republican since McConnell was hospitalized nearly a month ago.

When asked aboard Air Force One Wednesday whether he had been in contact with the former Senate majority leader since his June 14 hospitalization, Trump replied, "No," and when asked about McConnell's condition, Trump said, "I have no idea how he's doing," according to The Washington Examiner.

McConnell, 84, has remained hospitalized since mid-June for undisclosed reasons. His office has not revealed the cause of his hospitalization, saying only last week that the senator "continues to improve."

The prolonged hospital stay has renewed questions about McConnell's health and his ability to complete the remainder of his Senate term.

He was hospitalized for about eight days in February with flu-like symptoms and has experienced several highly publicized health incidents in recent years.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., and Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso, R-Wyo., have offered optimistic assessments of McConnell's recovery, saying they have spoken with him by phone during his hospitalization.

The limited information released by McConnell's office has prompted calls for greater transparency, including from Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear.

In a letter Wednesday, the Democrat governor urged McConnell to provide an update on his condition.

"As public officeholders, we have made a commitment to our constituents to do our best to represent them and to always be transparent. I believe this requires clear communication about one's ability to serve," Beshear wrote.

"Allowing speculation to continue in the media is not fair to the Senator or to Kentuckians, and my hope is that this provides him the opportunity to share the information in a transparent manner, direct from the source," he added.

McConnell, the longest-serving Senate leader in U.S. history, stepped down as Republican leader in January 2025, when Thune succeeded him as majority leader.

The Kentucky Republican announced the following month that he would not seek reelection, and his term is scheduled to end in January 2027.

Questions about McConnell's health have persisted in recent years. He fractured his shoulder after a fall in 2019 and later experienced several public falls.

During 2023 and 2024, he twice froze while speaking to reporters, raising concerns about his health. In October 2025, he fell again while walking through the Capitol ahead of a Senate vote.

McConnell has continued serving in the Senate throughout those incidents, though his latest hospitalization has been his longest in recent years.

His office has not indicated when he is expected to be discharged or return to the Senate.
