Mo. AG Hanaway to Newsmax: CCP-Linked Baby Monitors Threaten US Privacy

Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway said Tuesday on Newsmax that Chinese Communist Party-linked technology may be sitting inside American nurseries, as her office pursues a lawsuit against a major baby monitor company accused of concealing ties to Beijing.

Hanaway, appearing on "National Report," said Lorex Corporation misled consumers about the privacy and security of its cameras and baby monitors while maintaining connections to a Chinese company identified by U.S. officials as having ties to the Chinese military.

She said the investigation began after a technician in the Kentucky Attorney General's Office examined the devices' hardware and software.

"A very good technician in the Kentucky Attorney General's office did some checking on the hardware and software within this camera and discovered the company itself used to be held by a company called Dahua," Hanaway said.

She said U.S. intelligence agencies found Dahua was providing information to China's communist government. Although Lorex was later spun off, Hanaway said user data continues flowing through the same Chinese-linked infrastructure.

"When you go into the background and see where the information is getting downloaded, it's still getting downloaded to that Dahua company," she said.

Hanaway said Lorex's public claims about protecting consumer privacy are at the center of Missouri's lawsuit.

"Even though Lorex claims that they are private by design, they are in fact feeding this information back to their old parent company," she said.

Hanaway noted that the Department of Defense has designated Dahua as a Chinese military company.

By law, China requires companies operating within its borders to provide information requested by the Chinese Communist Party.

Hanaway said the prospect of Chinese-linked entities having access to cameras inside American homes should alarm parents.

"It's just so scary," she said. "We're talking about cameras that are in the most private places of people's homes, watching over the most cherished person in their lives — their brand-new baby."

According to Hanaway, many consumers may be unaware that devices marketed as tools to protect children could expose sensitive information to a foreign adversary.

"We don't want the Chinese to have this information," she said. "That's why we filed this lawsuit."

Hanaway said Missouri intends to hold the company accountable for what her office believes were deceptive disclosures and urged families to stop using the cameras while the case moves forward.
