Bryan Leib to Newsmax: Reported Iran-US Deal Likely Only Temporary

A reported memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran would likely serve only as a temporary measure, giving Tehran additional time rather than producing a lasting agreement, former Executive Director of Iranian Americans for Liberty Bryan Leib said Sunday on Newsmax.

"A lot of us are flying in the dark when it comes to what this MOU potentially is going to look like," Leib told "Sunday Report." "It is very important to emphasize that this is not an actual full-blown deal. This is an MOU potentially paving the way for a deal to happen."

Leib said details surrounding the potential memorandum remain unclear and noted that reports have offered differing accounts of what provisions it could contain.

He added that he does not believe a final agreement is likely because Iran's leadership is not interested in reaching an agreement.

"We're dealing with a regime that really is not interested in doing a deal," he said. "They just want to breathe a couple more days, have some more oxygen to keep going."

Addressing reports that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is attempting to secure uranium-related sites, Leib said the IRGC remains a powerful force despite losses among its leadership.

"The IRGC is still very much in control," he said. "They still very much have the infrastructure."

Leib said the organization continues to possess resources that could be used to threaten neighboring countries and support terrorist activities throughout the region.

"They're still alive and kicking, and they still have the resources to send their ICBMs into the Gulf states, potentially into Israel, and to still wage this terrorism throughout the region," he said.

Leib said any future agreement should focus on addressing the influence of the IRGC, which he described as the primary power center within Iran.

"Whatever happens with this MOU, whatever happens with any kind of potential deal, we really have to be focused on how we get rid of the IRGC," he said.

Leib also expressed support for helping Iranians seeking to challenge the country's leadership, citing social media messages from individuals inside Iran calling for support.

"We're starting to see a campaign coming out of occupied Iran where Iranians are sending messages saying, 'Arm us, help us overthrow this Islamic regime,'" he said.

Leib said continued economic and military pressure could weaken the regime enough to allow Iranians to challenge it.

"The best way to end this and the best way to not just make the world a better and safer place, but to help the Iranian people, is to arm them," he said. "Continue with the economic campaign as well as the military campaign against the Islamic regime, weaken them to a point where they cannot fight back, and then the Iranian people will finally have a chance to rise up."
