HBO host Bill Maher said Sunday his vote is "in play" for the 2028 presidential election and that he could support Vice President JD Vance if Democrats continue moving further to the left.

"Democrats are cowardly," Maher told ABC's "This Week" host Jonathan Karl. "They're cowardly."

He explained that Democrat leaders have failed to stand up to what he described as increasingly radical voices within the party.

The Democratic Socialists of America and other progressive factions are gaining influence while moderate Democrats remain silent, Maher added.

"Their party is being taken over now," he said. "Every day I hear about a new very radical guy."

Maher said he lost fans years ago by criticizing the political left but refused to ignore positions he considers extreme.

"I wasn't gonna go along with some of this crazy stuff on the Left too," he said. "I can't sit and just not notice stuff, which people seem to want to do because it's all about my team or your team."

Referring to pro-Palestinian demonstrations, he added: "When we're cheering for the Intifada ... cut! I'm out."

Maher also criticized proposals he attributed to the Democratic Socialists of America, including what he described as calls for a "takeover of key industries."

"I've read the quotes from the DSA platform from their own mouths," he said. "Don't tell me I'm not seeing what I am seeing."

Karl noted that Maher recently interviewed Vance and asked whether he could support the vice president in 2028.

"Yes," Maher replied. "If this is the Democratic side, yes."

Maher also predicted Democrats could perform well in this year's midterm elections because he expects them to become a referendum on President Donald Trump.

But he said the political landscape could change once Trump is no longer eligible to run.
