Rep. Austin Scott on Thursday defended President Donald Trump's newly signed Middle East memorandum of understanding, saying the president is pursuing peace in the region and deserves support as details of the deal continue to emerge.
"I commend the president [for] having the courage to take action against Iran," the Georgia Republican told Newsmax's "Wake Up America." "He's the first person that's had the guts to do this."
Trump, Scott added, has continued efforts to build on previous agreements between Israel and neighboring countries and is working toward greater stability in the Middle East.
"Donald Trump is the one who's had the guts to go out and get the accords with Israel signed with a lot of the countries," Scott said. "I think he's continuing to press towards what he wants, which is peace in the Middle East."
The Georgia congressman said observers should note that G7 leaders applauded after Trump signed the agreement.
"I think that says a lot right there," Scott said. "This is a global structure that, hopefully, will bring additional peace in the Middle East."
Scott also noted that any final agreement could eventually be reviewed by the U.N. Security Council, where countries including Russia and China would have opportunities to weigh in. He said he expects a final version of the agreement to emerge within about 60 days.
Turning to Georgia politics, Scott voiced strong support for Rep. Mike Collins, R-Ga., who is running against Sen. Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., in the 2026 Senate race.
Scott described Collins as an effective legislator and businessman who understands the challenges faced by employers.
"He is a private sector businessman," Scott said. "He understands what it takes to run a business. He understands what it takes to employ people."
Scott highlighted Collins' role in advancing legislation following the killing of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley by an illegal alien and said Collins is prepared for a competitive campaign against Ossoff.
"This is a fight for the heart and soul of America," Scott said.
He criticized Ossoff as a liberal Democrat and said Republicans would focus on the senator's voting record during the campaign.
When asked about Georgia legislative leaders deciding not to redraw the state's congressional maps before the 2026 midterm elections, Scott said the issue was never expected to affect the current election cycle.
"This redraw was always going to be for the next election cycle," Scott said.
He said lawmakers still have time to revisit reapportionment and that any redistricting effort would require agreement among the Georgia House, Senate, and governor.
Scott also expressed confidence in Republicans' prospects in Georgia's gubernatorial race, saying voters will respond to law-and-order issues.
"I think we're going to have a good election year when we get to November," Scott said. "And reapportionment, we can deal with that after the election if we need to."
