Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., said a staffer is responsible for a homophobic tweet his account posted that received bipartisan condemnation.

"Earlier today while working on the farm, my phone began going crazy because of a post made by a member of my comms team," Ogles wrote on social media Tuesday evening. "The post was stupid, hurtful and a complete distraction from my America First focus. The employee has been reprimanded."

Ogles' account had posted, "Homosexuality has no place in America. Happy Nuclear Family Month."

June is recognized as LGBTQ Pride Month. The post was later deleted but not before it generated backlash from his Republican colleagues.

"Homosexuality exists. In America," Rep. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., wrote on social media.

"In fact Andy, you have family, friends, neighbors, colleagues and constituents who are gay and lesbian," Lawler added. "It doesn't make them less than or somehow unworthy of being an American. What an absolutely idiotic statement to make."

On Wednesday, Lawler said he was glad Ogles deleted his post.

"Stop denigrating somebody just because you may disagree with who they are or their lifestyle," Lawler said. "The fact is, this is what makes America great. You go to another part of the world, and people are killed for being gay, so to me that kind of crap just has no place."

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., called the post reprehensible, while House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said it was "untoward."

"We're supposed to love our neighbors, everybody, supposed to treat every single person with dignity and respect, whether we agree with them or not," Johnson told reporters Wednesday.

Ogles has a history of making inflammatory remarks on social media. In March, he posted that "Muslims don't belong in American society."
