Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said her husband is recovering after undergoing surgery for a rare form of cancer, thanking supporters for their prayers and well wishes.
In a post on X, Gabbard said her husband, Abraham Williams, was diagnosed with a sacral chordoma, a rare cancerous tumor that develops in the bones of the skull base or spine.
"My husband Abraham was diagnosed with a very rare sacral chordoma," Gabbard wrote.
She said Williams recently underwent surgery to remove the tumor, describing the procedure as lengthy but successful.
"The surgery to remove bone and surrounding tissue lasted almost seven hours and was successful," Gabbard said.
The former Hawaii congresswoman said Williams experienced complications immediately after the operation and remains in significant pain as he begins his recovery.
"He had a rough night and is in a lot of pain but is finally home resting," she wrote. "Now recovery begins."
Gabbard did not provide additional details about when Williams was diagnosed, where he underwent treatment, or whether he will require additional therapy.
Chordomas are rare tumors that form from remnants of the embryonic notochord, according to the National Cancer Institute.
They most commonly occur along the spine and at the base of the skull. Sacral chordomas develop in the sacrum, the triangular bone at the base of the spine. Treatment often involves surgery and, in some cases, radiation therapy.
Williams, a cinematographer and photographer, married Gabbard in 2015 and has frequently accompanied her during political campaigns and public appearances.
Earlier this year, Gabbard announced she would step down as director of national intelligence at the end of the month after Williams was diagnosed with bone cancer, saying she wanted to devote her full attention to supporting him through his treatment and recovery.
Gabbard used the post to thank supporters who had reached out during the family's ordeal.
"We're so grateful for the outpouring of prayers and kind messages from all of you," she wrote. "Our hearts are full."
The update prompted an outpouring of support from followers and political allies on X, many of whom offered prayers and well wishes for Williams' recovery.
Gabbard, who serves as the nation's top intelligence official in President Donald Trump's administration, has maintained an active presence on social media, where she frequently shares updates about her work and personal life.
