President Donald Trump on Friday signed an executive order directing federal officials to install temporary signage near the Smithsonian Institution as part of an effort to correct what his administration says are longstanding issues at the National Museum of American History.

The White House said the order implements recommendations from a 162-page Domestic Policy Council report released this month that concluded the museum has strayed from its mission by presenting a politically driven interpretation of American history rather than a unifying account of the nation's past.

According to the report, museum exhibits emphasize race, oppression, and identity politics while giving too little attention to the nation's founding ideals, achievements, and shared history. The administration also contends the museum has adopted an activist perspective that presents the United States in an unnecessarily negative light.

The report recommends changes to exhibits and interpretive materials to provide what the administration describes as a more balanced and patriotic presentation of American history.

Under the executive order, the secretary of the interior is directed to install temporary signage near the Smithsonian while the administration considers additional actions.

The report stems from Trump's March executive order, "Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History," which directed federal officials to review Smithsonian museums and other federally supported cultural institutions for what the administration called "improper ideology."

Smithsonian officials have disputed the report's conclusions.

National Museum of American History Director Anthea M. Hartig recently told Congress the museum seeks to present a more complete account of the nation's history by incorporating perspectives that historically received less attention. She rejected the administration's contention that the museum has abandoned traditional American history or become politically driven.
