Rep. Tom Kean Jr., a New Jersey Republican whose months-long absence from Congress has fueled speculation about his political future and health, is expected to return to Washington for votes at the end of the month, according to his political adviser.

"The congressman will be back for votes on June 30," Harrison Neely told the New Jersey Globe on Thursday.

Kean, 57, has not cast a vote in the House since March 5 and has missed more than 100 roll-call votes while dealing with what aides have described only as a medical issue.

The congressman has declined to disclose the nature of his condition, saying he plans to do so once he returns to in-person work.

The two-term Republican, who represents New Jersey's competitive 7th Congressional District, has repeatedly assured supporters that he intends to seek reelection despite his extended absence.

His office has maintained that he is recovering and conducting work remotely while following the advice of doctors.

Questions about Kean's health and availability have drawn increasing attention in recent months, particularly because Republicans hold only a narrow majority in the House. His absence has deprived GOP leaders of a vote during several closely contested legislative battles.

Earlier this month, Kean pushed back a previously anticipated return date, saying he would transition from virtual work to in-person duties "within a matter of weeks."

At the time, he pledged to be "completely transparent" about his medical condition once he resumed normal activities.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., has said he expects Kean to make a full recovery, though he acknowledged he was not aware of the details of the congressman's condition. Johnson described Kean as a dedicated member and said he looked forward to welcoming him back to Congress.

The uncertainty surrounding Kean's absence has become a political issue in a district that Democrats view as one of their top pickup opportunities in November.

Several Democratic candidates have criticized the lack of information about the congressman's health and questioned whether constituents have received adequate updates.

Kean first won the 7th District seat in 2022, defeating Democratic incumbent Tom Malinowski, and secured reelection in 2024.

The district, which stretches across parts of northern and central New Jersey, remains one of the state's most competitive congressional battlegrounds.
