108-arm Robot for Cotton Topping Deployed in China's Xinjiang

July marks the critical window for cotton topping in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. In cotton fields across Xinjiang, farmers are racing against the farming schedule to carry out topping operations with fleets of robotic cotton toppers, replacing traditional manual labor with digitalized, precision farming work. 

At a cotton field in Aral city, a robotic cotton topper was gliding along crop rows. Its 108 mechanical arms can rise and fall rapidly to snip off the terminal buds of cotton plants with pinpoint accuracy, while operators can monitor the robot's real-time running status and operation data via tablet computers. 

Standing 3.8 meters tall and weighing 8 tonnes, this robotic cotton topper is equipped with advanced sensors and machine vision. According to its manufacturer, Viewer Tech, a Xinjiang-based agricultural robotics company, the machine can cover up to 2 hectares per hour, an efficiency roughly 120 times that of manual labor. 

Cotton topping is a core cultivation procedure that directly determines cotton yields. By removing apical dominance, nutrients are diverted to lateral branches and cotton bolls, encouraging more and larger bolls to develop. For years, manual topping has been physically demanding and low-efficiency. Chemical topping carries risks of pesticide residue and soil contamination, while conventional mechanical topping tends to damage cotton stalks. 

Industry insiders said robotic cotton toppers cut production costs by half compared with manual work, achieve a topping success rate of over 90 percent, and deliver effective restraint on regrowth of terminal buds.
