Several senior Trump administration officials have adopted a diet centered on fermented foods, including large quantities of sauerkraut, as part of a weight-loss and health regimen promoted by a physician whose approach has gained traction among some of the president's top advisers.
According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Vice President JD Vance, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy are among those following the program developed by Dr. Sean O'Mara.
The diet emphasizes fermented foods such as sauerkraut and kimchi, along with grass-fed steak and other whole foods. Participants are encouraged to avoid alcohol, sugar and heavily processed foods.
The Journal reported that O'Mara's recommendations have become popular among some administration officials seeking to lose weight and improve their overall health.
The physician has advocated a lifestyle focused on reducing visceral fat, increasing physical activity and consuming foods he argues support metabolic health.
The growing interest in the diet comes as Kennedy has made public health and nutrition a central part of his "Make America Healthy Again" agenda.
Since taking office, Kennedy has pushed for changes to federal dietary policies, greater scrutiny of food additives and increased attention to chronic disease prevention.
The administration's focus on nutrition has extended beyond government policy and into the personal habits of some officials.
The Journal reported that several Cabinet members have embraced O'Mara's dietary recommendations as they pursue weight-loss goals.
Sauerkraut, a fermented cabbage dish commonly associated with German cuisine, has emerged as one of the program's signature foods.
Fermented foods have gained popularity in recent years because they contain probiotics and other compounds believed to support digestive health, although nutrition experts differ on the extent of their benefits and the evidence supporting specific health claims.
O'Mara has become a prominent voice among some advocates of alternative approaches to health and wellness. His recommendations emphasize dietary changes and lifestyle interventions rather than pharmaceutical treatments.
Kennedy this week said he had lost 20 pounds "within 30 days."
"JD Vance is also on the diet and you can see how different he looks," he added.
Neither the White House nor the officials mentioned in the report immediately commented on their participation in the program.
