A new poll from Pew Research Center shows Catholics in the U.S. support Pope Leo XIV, despite President Donald Trump's criticism of him.

Nearly 8 in 10 American Catholics — 78% — have a favorable view of the first U.S.-born pontiff, which is down slightly from the last poll, when 84% viewed him favorably.

Catholics were split about Pope Leo's criticism of the Trump administration.

While 19% say Leo has been too critical of the president, 16% say he hasn't been critical enough, according to the poll.

In addition, 35% say Leo is striking the right balance, and 30% say they are not sure, have no opinion, or have never heard of Leo, Pew found.

Trump is being too critical of the Pope, 51% of Catholics said, while 4% say he hasn't been critical enough, with 14% saying he's striking the right balance, according to the poll.

Pope Leo has been a critic of the U.S.-Iran war, angering Trump.

"Well, the Pope would rather talk about the fact that it's OK for Iran to have a nuclear weapon, and I don't think that's very good," Trump said in May. "I think he's endangering a lot of Catholics and a lot of people.

"But I guess if it's up to the Pope, he thinks it's just fine for Iran to have a nuclear weapon."

Trump has labeled Leo "weak" on crime and "terrible" on foreign policy and accused him of "catering to the radical left."

Leo said he was always against nuclear weapons.

"I simply hope to be listened to because of the value of the word of God," he said.

Leo has issued consistent calls for peace and dialogue and has denounced the use of religious justification for war.

In April, he called Trump's threat to annihilate Iranian civilization "truly unacceptable."

Most Catholics in both partisan coalitions have positive views of Pope Leo, the poll found.

But Catholic Democrats and independents who lean Democratic express somewhat more favorable views of Leo than Catholic Republicans do, the poll found.

About 32% of Catholic Republicans say Trump has been critical of Pope Leo, with 39% saying Pope Leo has been too critical of Trump, compared with 70% of Democrats saying Trump is too critical of Pope Leo and 3% saying Pope Leo is too critical of Trump.

The poll surveyed 1,848 Catholics from May 26 to June 1. It has an overall margin of error of plus or minus 3.2 percentage points.
