More than 80% of Americans say only U.S. citizens should vote in federal elections, a protection provided by the SAVE America Act, according to a poll released Monday.

The legislation, passed by the House but stalled in the Senate, would require proof of citizenship to register to vote and a photo ID to cast a ballot. It also would place restrictions on mail-in balloting and require states to remove noncitizens from their official lists of eligible voters.

The poll, conducted by McLaughlin & Associates for Tea Party Patriots Action, surveyed 1,000 general election voters July 15-21. No margin of error was provided.

It showed that 82% agreed only U.S. citizens should be allowed to vote in elections for president, the U.S. Senate, and the U.S. House. The question drew strong support across political divides, with 91% of Republicans, 72% of Democrats, and 84% of independents agreeing that only U.S. citizens should be allowed to vote for president and members of Congress.

The poll further showed voters favor other safeguards provided in the SAVE America Act. Seventy-eight percent said proof of citizenship should be required to register to vote, and 78% said voters should show a photo ID at the polls.

Again, respondents showed strong majorities for both questions across political divides.

Regarding proof of citizenship to register to vote, 94% of Republicans, 68% of Democrats, and 73% of independents agreed. When it came to showing a photo ID, 94% of Republicans, 63% of Democrats, and 75% of independents agreed.

Ninety-five percent of respondents said they have a valid photo ID, such as a driver's license, state ID, or passport. And 66% said requiring a photo ID to vote is a reasonable requirement that the vast majority of Americans can easily meet.

President Donald Trump has pressed the Senate to cancel its planned recess until it passes the act. Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., has said there are not enough votes to overcome the Senate's 60-vote filibuster threshold and not enough Republican support to abolish the filibuster, as Trump has urged.

Fifty-six percent of voters, including 38% of Democrats, believe the Senate should continue to work to pass the bill before the midterm elections.

"The SAVE America Act is rightfully at the top of President Trump's domestic agenda," Tea Party Patriots Action Chair Jenny Beth Martin told Breitbart.

"Our poll shows that an overwhelming majority of American voters — including a strong majority of Democrats — support proof of U.S. citizenship in order to register to vote and showing voter ID when casting a ballot."
