House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., criticized California's delay in tabulating votes Monday.

"They are counting votes weeks after the election," Johnson told reporters. "I'm not saying it's rigged. I'm saying it stinks to high heaven, and everybody knows that."

"Let's have votes on an election the day of the election," Johnson added. "That's what many states are able to do. I think California is playing around with this."

The speaker did not say whether he had any evidence of fraud being committed.

"Some of these efforts are so diabolical and so far upstream that it's impossible to prove, but I think everybody knows instinctively, something is wrong here, and that's a concern," Johnson said.

On Sunday, progressive Nithya Raman clinched a spot in the Los Angeles mayoral runoff. Raman overtook former reality TV star Spencer Pratt, who had spent days in second place as votes continued to be counted.

Raman will face incumbent Mayor Karen Bass, who is running for a second term.

The U.S. attorney's office in Los Angeles said Friday that it had opened "multiple election fraud investigations" related to California's elections and sent a prosecutor to the county's vote-counting center.

President Donald Trump has called the California elections "rigged."

"Has anybody been watching the CROOKED Election going on in California," Trump wrote late Sunday on Truth Social. "Two great Republican Candidates are being cheated, and so is America, which if the Dumocrats are able to fulfill their mission, great trouble and consternation will follow. Watch this 'Election' closely!!!"

Under California law, mail ballots are valid if they are postmarked by Election Day and arrive at county election offices by June 9. California is known for vote counts that can take days to complete.

County elections officials must report final official results to the secretary of state by July 3.
